Why I am doing the Red Socks Challenge for Kidney Health
It is that time of year again folks' - the annual Red Socks Challenge, where I ask all of my friends and family to dig (only as) deep as they can to help me help Kidney Health Australia.
In what will be my third year taking part in this amazing appeal, I am really hoping to smash my previous fundraising goals. I will be walking & riding 200kms in October and have set my fundraising goal at $3000!!
Many of you already know that this cause is particularly close to me heart. Three years ago, my husband Hamish, at the age of 37, became one of the unlucky ones to be diagnosed with Stage 5 chronic kidney disease. At the time of his diagnosis Hamish was down to just 13% kidney function and was sitting at about 9% when he started home dialysis. Our life as we knew it came to a very scary and abrupt halt. Without having time to truly absorb what was happening, everything now revolved around getting Hamish ready for dialysis – one of his two options to stay alive. Nothing else mattered.
There are currently 25,000 people living with kidney failure in Australia, and potentially many more who do not even realise it. It is very common to lose up to 90% of kidney function before having any symptoms and once your kidneys reach failure, there is no cure. Without such fundraising events which help raise much need funds, the resources which are currently available to us, would not be. These resources allow people like my husband to stay alive and live as normal a life as possible, whilst awaiting and after having his kidney transplant.
Any amount you are able to donate would be wonderful and extremely appreciated. You’ll be helping Kidney Health Australia not only support those living with kidney disease, like Haymo but also help raise awareness of early detection. I know this year may be particularly difficult for people to donate so please, if you are unable to donate, feel free to share instead!
